Wyoming And Madeira Repeat As League Cross Country Champs


The top awards were almost identical to last year at the CHL Cross Country Championships, held at Taylor High School Saturday morning.  Both teams repeated as champs, both coaches repeated as Coach of the Year, and one of the runners repeated as Runner of the Year. The top six runners got gold medals (1st Team All League), 7th - 11th were silver medalist (2nd Team), & 12th to 16th were bronze medalist (Honorable Mention).

Wyoming won the girls' championship with score of 43.  Mariemont was 2nd (52), Indian Hill 3rd (63), & Taylor 4th (73). Senior Hannah Korte of Taylor held off senior Riley Bahr of Wyoming to win the race with season best 18:34. Freshman Jessica Sanders of Finneytown was 3rd.  Rounding out the gold medalist were senior Marin Valentine of Mariemont (4th), freshman Elizabeth Whaley of Indian Hill (5th), & junior Riley Dunne of Mariemont (6th).  This rest of the Wyoming top five scorers were sophomore Sylvia Coyle (8th), senior Katy Vanatsky (9th), freshman Allsion Abplanalp (10th), & freshman Maggie Simmons (14th).  Junior Erin Kelly of Mariemont was 7th and senior Ellie Rabenbold was 11th. Besides Simmons, the other bronze medalists were junior Claudia Hollander (Indian Hill-12th), sophomore Megan Fox (Taylor-13th), freshman Maggie Schoney (Indian Hill-15th), & junior Grace Patrick (Taylor-16th).  As mentioned above, this was back to back league title for Wyoming and their 10th in the CHL history. Cowboy coach Jim Frondorf was Coach of the Year for the 2nd straight year.  Korte was Runner of the Year.

Madeira boys matched Wyoming girl's point total with a 43 to win their 2nd league title in a row and 8th in CHL history.  The Mustangs, running without their normal 5th runner, held off 2nd place Indian Hill (57 points).  Wyoming was 3rd (75), Mariemont 4th (83), Taylor 5th (109), & Reading 6th (167).  Senior Ben Bayless of Indian Hill won his 2nd league title in a row with a season best 15:32.  He was 14 seconds faster than 2nd place Nick Lake (junior) of Taylor. Swartz of Wyoming was 3rd & senior Nolan Heffernan of Indian Hill 4th as the first four runners all broke 16:00 on the 5 kilometer course.  Rounding out the gold medalist were junior Ben Ramos of Madeira 5th & junior John Nice of Wyoming 6th.  Madeira's other four scorers were  junior Diego Arredondo (7th), senior Joseph Kirby (8th), junior Dylan Whitson (9th), & freshman Jacob Gaffney (14th).  Also getting silver medals were a pair of Mariemont runners, senior Nolan Buck (10th) & freshman Sam Beeler (11th).  Besides Gaffney, the other bronze medalist were junior Chase Grauel (Taylor-12th), junior Bradley Corl (Indian Hill-13th), junior Collin Bornholdt (Wyoming-15th), & freshman Henry Buck (Mariemont-16th).  For the 2nd year in a row, Josh Dooley of Madeira was Coach of the Year and also for the  2nd year in a row, Bayless was Runner of the Year.
