State Track & Field Championships Are Set For Friday & Saturday

The state track & field championships are set to go Friday & Saturday.  A total of 13 league athletes from 4 schools will be there.  For the boys' it will be the 108th state championship.  It is the oldest state championship for any high school sport in Ohio and one of the oldest high school championships in the country.  The girls' will be in the 42nd state championship.
The meet has been held at Jessie Owens Stadium on the campus of Ohio State since 2004.  The facility has one of the few nine lane tracks in the country.  Because of that, nine runners or relay teams qualify for the finals in the prelim events.  The top eight in all events will be on the podium to receive medals. One aspect of the regional & state track & field meets is that the coach of the winning athlete or relay teams presents the medals for that event.  Divisions I, II, & III all compete on the Friday & Saturday so the stadium and surrounding areas are very busy for those two days.

In Division II, the field events are split between both days.  There are three league athletes in field events and the all compete on Friday.  Running prelims will be on Friday (9 qualify for finals).  Seven athletes will in prelims in six different events.  Three athletes will be in distance finals that will run on Saturday.

By far the busiest athlete will be sophomore Anna Podojil of Indian Hill.  She has qualified in four events.  The only other league athlete to be in multiple events is her sister Ellie.  Even as a sophomore, Anna is no stranger to the state championships.  As a freshman, she made the finals in the 100, 200, & 400 dashes.  She was on the podium in two; 400 Dash 4th, 200 Dash 5th.  This year she is in the same three individual events plus on the 4 x 200 Relay.  Anna is the 3rd seed in the 100 Dash & 4th seed in the 400 Dash.  In the 200 Dash, she is going in as the top seed.  The Indian Hill 4 x 200 Relay of Anna & Ellie Podojil, senior Karen Folz, & Sophomore Margo David are seeded 11th.  Freshman Ellie Podojil also qualified in the 300 Hurdles where she is the 9th seed.  Aonther freshman for the Braves, Ashleigh Prugh is the 10th seed in the 1600 Run.  Whereas Anna Podojil is the busiest league athlete this year, senior Carson Fields of Mariemont is the veteran runner at state.  Fields will be in the 100 Dash this year as the 9th seed.  She competed in the state last year in the 4 x 200 Relay (15th place) & 300 Hurdles (11th place).  In her sophomore year, she had a 7th place podium finish in the 300 Hurdles.  Teammate Marin Valentine will be in her first state meet.  The sophomore is the 12th seed in the 400 Dash.
Of the six league boys competing at state, one is a veteran and five are newcomers.  Junior Justin Dreyling of Reading will be making his 2nd trip to the state championships in the long jump.  Last year he finished 4th.  This year he is seeded 2nd, only 1 inch behind the leader.  Throughout most of the track & field season, Justin has been ranked 1st in Division II Long Jump in Ohio.  His best effort this season has been 22'10.5.  Junior Mykal Bright of Indian Hill had a season best long jump last week at the regional meet which was good enough to land him at state.  He is the 11th seed.  Reading senior Nate Stidham has dominated the discus and shot put in the Cincinnati area this season.  He had disappointment last week in the discus in the regional meet when he fouled in his three prelim attempts.  He made up for it in the shot put when be bettered his own school record by almost two feet to qualify for state.  Nate is the 4th seed.  The other three athletes are in running events.  Reading sophomore Gabe Vanskaik is in his first year of track & field.  He will be in the 400 Dash prelims on Friday.  Two other runners will be distance finals Saturday. Senior Brad Greene of Taylor will be in the 800 Run.  Sophomore Ben Bayless of Indian Hill will be in the 3200 Run.

Here are the Friday start times for field finals and running prelims for CHL athletes:
